Tequila

The difference comes down to aging—and the character it brings to the tequila. Hornitos Plata tequila is unaged, which keeps the flavor bright, crisp and full of fresh blue agave character. It’s lively, clean and perfect when you want tequila that shines in cocktails or keeps things refreshing and straightforward.

Hornitos Reposado tequila, on the other hand, rests for at least two months in large oak vats. Because the tequila has minimal contact with the wood, it keeps its vibrant agave profile while gaining subtle layers of flavor, including distinctive apple and herbal notes. The result is a tequila that feels smooth and balanced, with just a touch of oak complexity.

Hornitos Añejo tequila is aged in white oak barrels for at least one year. That time in oak allows the tequila to develop a deeper, richer character while still letting the agave shine through. As it matures, the tequila picks up notes of vanilla, hazelnut and dried fruit from the barrel, creating a smoother and more complex profile along with its distinctive amber color.

Hornitos Añejo Reserve earns its name through a unique triple-aging process that builds layers of flavor. The tequila is aged in three different American oak barrels—first toasted, then charred, and finally finished in a specially toasted barrel. Each stage adds a new dimension to the tequila, creating a smooth, rich profile with notes of smoky vanilla, buttery caramel and warm, whiskey-like depth.

Not at all. Hornitos Cristalino tequila starts as a fully aged Añejo tequila, not a Blanco. After aging, it’s filtered to achieve its crystal-clear appearance while keeping the character developed in the barrel. The result is a tequila that combines the smoothness of an aged expression with a lighter, more refined profile, featuring notes of sweet vanilla, delicate wood and balanced sweetness, with a medium, smooth finish.

Hornitos Reposado rests for at least two months in large oak vats, but with minimal contact with the wood. That approach helps keep the tequila’s bright agave character front and center, rather than letting heavy oak influence take over. The result is a Reposado that stays lively and agave-forward, with a lighter color (pale straw) than many wood-aged tequilas.

Tequila Flavors

Hornitos offers flavored tequilas designed to bring bold character and creativity into cocktails. The lineup includes Hornitos Cucumber Habanero and Hornitos Lime, each built on a tequila base with natural flavors that bring a fresh twist to classic tequila drinks. Whether you’re looking for something spicy and unexpected or bright and citrusy, these flavors open up plenty of possibilities behind the bar.

Hornitos tequila flavors are bottled at 35% alcohol by volume. That ABV keeps the spirit bold and full of agave character while allowing the natural flavors to come through clearly in simple tequila drinks.

Hornitos flavored tequilas are made with natural flavors, designed to complement the character of 100% agave tequila rather than overpower it. The goal is to create bold, balanced flavor combinations that feel fresh and vibrant in tequila cocktails.

Hornitos Cucumber Habanero tequila is designed to strike a bold but balanced contrast. The flavor opens with cool, refreshing cucumber, then gradually builds into the heat of habanero pepper, creating a lively kick that stays smooth and drinkable. The result is spicy, but also fresh and vibrant—perfect for cocktails that want a little extra attitude.

Hornitos Lime tequila is crafted with natural lime flavor to deliver a bright citrus character that pairs naturally with tequila. The result is a bold, zesty expression that brings fresh lime energy into margaritas and other tequila cocktails without needing much else in the glass.

Our History

Hornitos was first created in 1950, when Don Francisco Javier Sauza set out to craft a tequila that broke away from tradition and celebrated a more independent spirit. He introduced Hornitos on Mexican Independence Day, marking the beginning of a brand that has always done things its own way.

The Sauza family played a key role in shaping tequila as we know it today. As one of the earliest families to produce and promote tequila beyond Mexico, they helped bring the spirit to a wider audience and establish it as a category worth celebrating. With Hornitos, Don Francisco Javier Sauza continued that tequila legacy—pushing boundaries and helping redefine what this spirit could be.

Hornitos helped redefine tequila by introducing a smoother, more approachable style that didn’t exist in the same way before. By developing what would become known as Reposado, Hornitos created a style that balanced fresh agave character with added depth, opening the door for a whole new way to enjoy tequila. It set the stage for Gold tequila to become one of the most popular styles in the category today.

Hornitos is produced in Jalisco, Mexico, the heartland of tequila and the place where the spirit’s tradition began. Every bottle stays connected to its roots, crafted in the region where blue agave thrives and tequila culture runs deep.

“Hornitos” means “little ovens” in Spanish. The name is inspired by the small clay ovens traditionally used in tequila production to cook agave. It’s a nod to the craft and heritage behind the spirit, while reflecting our respect for tradition—even as we continue to do things our own way.

Our Production Process

Hornitos tequila is made from 100% blue agave, grown and harvested in Jalisco, Mexico. The agave is cooked, crushed and fermented before being distilled to create a tequila that’s smooth, vibrant and full of character. From there, different expressions are either bottled fresh or aged to develop additional depth and complexity—always staying true to the bold, agave-forward style that defines us.

Our agave extraction method starts by crushing the softened piñas after cooking to release their juice, known as aguamiel. That sweet liquid is then fermented as natural yeasts transform its sugars into alcohol, creating a base spirit with floral and herbal notes that helps define the character of our blue agave tequila.

At our distillery, the agaves are slowly baked to convert their carbohydrates into fermentable sugars. This process helps release aromas of honey and caramelized fruit while preserving the agave’s natural sweetness, creating the foundation for the flavor of Hornitos tequila.

For our aged tequilas, we use American white oak barrels. As the tequila matures, the barrels help build added depth and character, bringing notes of vanilla and wood while keeping the agave profile at the center.

Our tequilas are typically double distilled, which helps achieve a smooth, clean profile while preserving the character of the agave. Some expressions, like Hornitos Cristalino Reserve tequila, are triple distilled to deliver an even more refined and polished finish.

Our Cocktails

Some of our most popular cocktails are all about keeping things fresh, bold and easy to enjoy. Classic tequila cocktails like the Margarita, Paloma and Tequila Mule are always go-to choices, bringing out the vibrant character of our tequila in different ways.

We also love to mix things up with more expressive serves like a Spicy Margarita or a refreshing Ranch Water—simple combinations that let the agave shine while adding a little extra attitude to the glass.

A Spicy Margarita recipe with Hornitos takes the classic Margarita and gives it a bold, fiery twist. It keeps the fresh citrus base you expect, then layers in heat from fresh jalapeño slices to create a drink that’s bright, zesty and just a little rebellious. It’s the perfect way to add some edge while still keeping things balanced and refreshing.

Our Reposado Margarita is all about keeping it fresh, simple and full of flavor. Made with Hornitos Reposado, fresh lime juice and agave syrup, it’s shaken with ice and served in a salt-rimmed rocks glass over fresh ice for a bright, refreshing tequila drink with plenty of character. A lime wedge on top, and it’s ready to raise a glass.

The best tequila depends on the kind of cocktail you’re in the mood for. For lighter, refreshing drinks like Margaritas or Palomas, Hornitos Plata is a great choice thanks to its crisp, agave-forward profile. If you’re after something with a little more depth, Hornitos Reposado adds a smoother, more rounded character that works well in richer cocktails. For something more expressive, our flavored tequilas—like Lime or Cucumber Habanero—bring a bold twist that can transform easy tequila cocktails into something unexpected.

Hornitos is made to be enjoyed your way. It’s smooth enough to sip or take as a shot, but it really comes to life in tequila mixed drinks, where its vibrant agave character can shine alongside fresh ingredients and simple mixers. Whether you’re keeping it classic or trying something new, Hornitos is all about making tequila easy to enjoy and ready for any moment.
